                                                            Mail  Call
Hello Mister Stephen!!
Just read the mail call in TEO re: the man "azure" and his sight etc....
I have read of a few mushrooms that are being used to improve vision
etc..:  Armillariella melea -  the Honey Mushroom. Which is said to increase
blood flow to the brain. It is also said to strengthen lungs. And has
shown antibiotic action against certain bacteria. Also has shown to have
a positive effect against hypertension.
Frequent consumption of Cantharellus cibarius - the Golden Chanterelle,
is said to improve vision.
Fomitopsis pinicola - Red-belted Polypore, is used for nervous headaches,
which makes me think it is good for the blood flow to the head.
(Speaking of which, I have some of this that will make an interesting
picture....when it warms up!!)

I can't find the info off hand, but I have read Hericium erinaceus -
Lion's Mane, has possibilities in helping with neurological issues such
as senility and Alzheimer's. All of these are probably somewhere on there
internet.
Possible nerve tonics include:
Grifola frondosa - Hen-of-the-Woods
H. erinaceus - Lion's Mane
Lentinula edodes - Shiitake
Cordyceps sinensis
Ganoderma lucidum - Reishi
I get most of my info on the medicinal aspects of mushrooms from
Medicinal Mushrooms by Christopher Hobbs, L. Ac. (Highly recommended.)  Robin

                                  Finding The Magic In Mushrooms

http://www.spectroscopynow.com/coi/cda/detail.cda?id=10819&type=Feature&chId=4&page=1

May 15, 2005
The global legality of magic mushrooms is gradually being eroded as more countries are declaring them to be illegal substances. In the search for reliable methods to distinguish them from legitimate types of mushroom, a new technique based on the detection of a fluorescent derivative of the hallucinogenic component psilocin has been tested.

Humans have taken magic mushrooms for hundreds of years although some believe that they were used by ancient civilizations thousands of years ago, based on images in cave paintings. The name derives from their psychoactive nature. Consumers have hallucinogenic experiences, similar to those with LSD and Mescaline, although the effects are said to be unpredictable, depending on the species of mushroom and the

#24 TEO May 2008  Page 01                    Copyrighted Material

amount taken. In some circles, they are known as sacred mushrooms because South American shamans, especially in Mexico , used them in religious ceremonies, giving the name Teonanácatl, or "Flesh of the Gods". Dried mushrooms were also claimed to have healing properties.

Once ingested, the mushrooms generally cause feelings of nausea before the desired mental effects appear. They give a mild high accompanied by altered feelings and distorted perceptions of touch, sight, sound and taste. Some users experience enjoyable effects but others can feel anxious, with fear of insanity, death, or losing control. The active components are psilocin and psilocybin, although they are not particularly toxic to humans - poisoning events are rare.

Despite their relatively gentle effects, magic mushrooms are generally subjected to legal control. Although there is some inconsistency between legislation in different countries, there has been a general tightening of control in recent years. In the UK , the Government allowed the sale of fresh magic mushrooms, but dried mushrooms were banned because they were considered a preparation. However, a new drugs bill was introduced in December 2004, reclassifying magic mushrooms as a class A drug, in the same group as heroin and cocaine. The independent research group DrugScope sees this classification as overkill. In Canada, both psilocin and psilocybin are class III drugs and in every USA state except Florida magic mushrooms are banned.

In Japan , where the mushrooms were outlawed in 2002, researchers have been devising a method for measuring psilocin, in order to back up the legislation. Toshimasa Toyo'oka and colleagues from the School of Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Shizuoka with co-workers from the Division of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry at the National Institute of Health Sciences employed a fluorescent derivatisation reagent to determine psilocin in dried magic mushrooms and in rat plasma following administration of a saline solution of the drug.

The method was described in Anal. Chim. Acta 2004, 527 , 149. After extracting psilocin with ethyl acetate, it was derivatised with 4-(dimethylaminosulphonyl)-7-{(2-chloroformyl)pyrrolidin-1-yl}-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (DBD), along with the structurally related internal standard Bufotenine. Underivatised indoles, such as psilocin, generally fluoresce at wavelengths around 340 nm, but the intensity for psilocin is too low for trace analysis. The DBD derivative fluoresces strongly at 560 nm and was measured by HPLC with fluorescence detection. A linear calibration curve was obtained for psilocin in mushroom extracts.

Although the fluorescence method works satisfactorily, selectivity may become problematical with some sample matrices, so the researchers also tried LC/MS with electrospray ionisation, in selected ion monitoring mode. The protonated molecular ions of psilocin and the internal standard were monitored successfully, with a linear range of 0.16-4.08 ng psilocin, similar to that for the fluorescence method. However, mass

#24 TEO May 2008  Page 02   Copyrighted Material

spectrometry has the advantage of confirming the structure of the derivative and dealing better with interfering compounds, due to the selective nature of the monitored ions.

By the LC/MS method, psilocin levels were all below 12.7 ng/mg dried mushroom but varied markedly from one sample to the next. The reasons for this were unclear, but since the method worked well with standard samples, the variations may be due to species differences or the condition of the dried samples. Good results were also obtained for psilocin in rat plasma, after administration of psilocybin which is metabolized to psilocin in vivo. Drug levels peaked within 15 minutes and gradually decreased to a steady low level within 2 hours.

Some researchers may be discouraged by the requirement for derivatisation but the reaction proceeded easily and quickly, giving efficient, complete labeling in only 10 minutes. Toyo'oka suggested that the method will be suitable for measuring psilocin in other biological specimens and revealed that they are looking for a similar method to determine the other active component psilocybin.  Sent in by Robert Mason, NC.

Psilocybin and Its Orifice-Type Cell Relaxation

Psilocybin causes many orifice-type cell structures to relax, including your sweat gland openings.  Just like sometimes there seems to be excessive eye tearing.  The tear gland orifice has relaxed.  And many experience sudden amounts of phlegm in their throats, almost as if one had a cold.  What is really happening is a natural cleansing of bad toxins in your system.  And yes, they stink.  Just their smell should tell you......You don't want that crap in you, and only good could come from getting it out.  This same effect that happens from Psilocybin was investigated and research by myself many years ago.....late 70's.  I first discovered this medicinal trait while studying people who ate Psilocybe cubensis to help with certain types of arthritis, the kind where there is no natural lubricants between the joints.  As any of you can imagine, no lubricant can only bring about grave pain and other problems.  From the two old gentlemen that I studied, it appeared that when the mushrooms were eaten, the small, and maybe clogged) openings that release the said lubricants, did in fact relax and open which allowed lubricants to once again enter in the joints.  In both cases, the effect would last for 5 to 6 months, and other times 1 to 2 years.  I first published this in "FRUIT  OF  THE  GODS", the original Ms., and later in back issues of "THE  MUSHROOM  CULTURE", The Journal of Mushroom Cultivation (TMC).  slp/fmrc

                    Ending the Myth of Horus

Posted by Consigliere on Monday, January 10, 2005 at 06:43 AM. Read 37198 times. Tags: religion …..I’ve heard repeated here several times that Horus, an Egyptian god, is carbon copy of Jesus.  The obvious implication by those that have made this statement is that Jesus is a copycat version of an earlier Egyptian deity.  The purpose of this entry is to disembowel that proposition once and for all.

When I first heard that Horus was the inspiration for Jesus several years ago, I didn’t give it much credence because I couldn’t establish any source material for the claims.  I still can’t, but the internet is as adept at allowing anybody and everybody to pass on misinformation.

Upon further research, I’ve concluded that this theory originated with Gerald Massey, an English poet, born 1828, died 1927.  He published primarily poems, but had an interest in Egypt.  He parlayed that interest in Egypt into several books and lectures in which he set forth the proposition that Horus was in essence the first Jesus, and Jesus was a cheap imitation.  The primary basis for his writing is the Egyptian Book of the Dead.  This is available on-line and you can easily look it up to read it yourself.  Be forewarned that forced reading of this would be an extremely efficient form of torture.

It should be noted that Massey’s actual proposition was that Jesus was a copycat from more than just Horus.  According to Massey, Jesus was a compilation of an innumerable number of Egyptian deities.  There were over 2,000 deities who had every human and godlike characteristic one can think of, excepting Superman’s power to stop a speeding bullet.

Since Massey, there is a dearth of anybody with any credentials that has adopted a straight Horus=Jesus theory.  There is a one individual that has adopted some of Massey’s thoughts and incorporated them into a book-The Christ Conspiracy.  This appears to be the basis for the claims that I see.  The author is Acharya S.  Her website is http://www.truthbeknown.com I note that Richard Price, a noted Christ Myther, and one that I take much more seriously then Acharya, said the following:

“Those of use who uphold any version of the controversial Christ Myth theory find ourselves immediately the object not just of criticism, but even of ridicule. And it causes us chagrin to be lumped together with certain writers with whom we share the Christ Myth butt little else.....

His other criticism, like mine, is that she uses very dated sources (19th Century) who were in Price’s words “eccentrics, freethinkers, and theosophists.”

Les, I am using your post from 1/3/05 as an example of the claims because you carry more credibility than most. That said here are the claims and what I have found:

#24 TEO May 2008  Page 04   Copyrighted Material

Claim #1-Horus and Jesus are born from a virgin.

Horus’s mother is Isis.  Isis was married to Osiris.  We do not know for what length of time, but presumably the marriage was consummated.  Whether it was or wasn’t doesn’t matter though.  After Osiris is killed, Isis puts him back together again (he was hacked into 14 pieces) except for his penis which was tossed in a river or a lake.  Iris fashions a substitute penis for him, humps him and here comes Horus.  There is nothing virginal about that.

Claim #2-Both Horus and Jesus were born to a Mary and Joseph. (Seb)

As noted Isis is Horus’s mother’s name not Mary.  In addition, Seb is not Horus’s father, Osiris is.  Seb is Osiris’s father.  Further, Seb is a distinct name from Joseph.  Putting them side by side does not make them synonyms, and that appears to be what was done here.

Claim #3-Both were born of royal descent.

This is accurate.

Claim #4-Both births were announced by angels and witnessed by shepherds.

I can find nothing that mentions that the birth of Horus was announced by an angel or witnessed by shepherds.  I have found that Horus was born in a swamp, which is a pretty unlikely place for shepherds.  In addition Acharya mentions that Horus was born in a cave.  Massey makes no mention of this, although he does represent that Mithra was born in a cave.

Claim #5-Both were heralded by stars and angels.

There is no star that heralded Horus’s birth nor is there any angel announcing it.  Archarya in a footnote in The Origins of Christianity indicates that that there are three stars named the three kings in Orion and then relates this to the birth of Jesus.  When we look to the stories regarding Horus, we find no star or angel announcing his birth.  To the extent that Acharya S relies upon Massey and Massey relies upon what is depicted in the panels at Luxor see (from an atheist) further regarding virgin birth and pronouncement by angels http://www.frontline-apologetics.com/carrier_luxor_inscription.htm

Claim #6-Both had later visitors (Horus-3 deities and Jesus-3 wisemen.)

There is no indication that there ever were 3 wisemen.  The bible never mentions the number of wisemen, nor is there any document that reflects 3 deities at the birth of Horus.  See the website referenced in Claim #5.

#24 TEO May 2008  Page 05              Copyrighted Material

Claim #7-Both had murder plots against them.

There is mention that Seth did want to kill Horus, and Herod wanted to kill Jesus.  so this is accurate.

Claim#8-Both came of age at 12, were baptized and their baptizers were executed

There is no indication that Horus was preaching in a temple when he was 12.  In fact, Massey indicates that Hours the child was depicted as a “weakling.” That doesn’t jive with story of Jesus preaching in the temple.  Again this appears to have been a confabulation from Acharya and repeated by others.

Horus was never baptized in any of the Horus stories.  In addition, Acharya mentions that John the Baptist is actually Anup the Baptizer.  This individual is never mentioned anywhere in any Horus account.  There is not even a footnote in Archaya’s on-line work The Origins of Christianity to support this.  There is nothing.

Claim #9-Both had 12 disciples.

According to the Horus accounts, Horus had four semi-gods that were followers.  There is some indication of 16 human followers and an unknown number of blacksmiths that went into battle with him.  Horus did not have 12 disciples. Jesus reportedly did.  Acharya failed to give a footnote to support this.

Massey points to a mural in the Book of Hades in which there are twelve reapers.  Horus is not present in this scene.  For Massey to make this connection he goes to a different scene within the same mural.  In this scene there is a picture of a god whose name is the Master of Joy.  Horus is never depicted although in other murals the artists do depict Horus.  Had the artists ascribed 12 reapers in any relation to Horus all they had to do was put Horus at the scene.  They did not.

Claim #10-Both walked on water.

Horus didn’t, or at least there is no record that I can find that he did.  Massey does not maintain that Horus did.  Massey uses wild conjecture to connect the story of fish man, Oannes, not Horus, to Jesus.  Oannes came out of the sea during the day, and went back into the sea at night.  Massey makes the two analogous because by his calculations, Jesus walked on water during the day.

As to Acharya, she as usual provides nothing to substantiate this.

Claim #11-Both performed miracles.

This is true although the miracles were different in scope and nature.

#24 TEO May 2008  Page 06              Copyrighted Material

Claim #12 Both exorcised demons and raised Lazarus.

The actual claim is that Horus raised Osiris from the dead and that the name Osiris morphed to Lazarus.  It doesn’t matter because Horus did not bring Osiris back to life.  There is no mention of this in any document regarding the story.  Horus did avenge Osiris’s death, but that did not raise Osiris from the dead.

Claim #13-Both held a Sermon on the Mount; both were transfigured on a mountain, died by crucifixion along with two thieves and were buried in tombs where they paid a quick visit to Hell and then rose from the dead after 3 days time, both resurrections were witness by women, and both will supposedly reign for 1,000 years in the Millennium.

These are the most damning claims if they were proven true in my opinion.  Yet, I can locate none of this.  No sermon, no transfiguration, certainly no crucifixion w/ two thieves, no trip to hell and no resurrection.  There was an incident in which Horus was torn to pieces and Iris requested the crocodile god to fish him out of the water he was tossed into, which was done, but that’s it.  I am at a loss to refute this because I can not find anything to support it.

Massey does compares a story about the Autumn Equinox related to Osiris, not Horus, as the symbolic crucifixion.  There is no indication that Horus is involved in any way.  There is no mention by Massey of any Sermon on the Mount.  No mention or any actual crucifixion, no two thieves, no burial in a tomb.  Massey does not maintain that anything of the sort occurred with Horus.  In short, of the claims outlined in this entry, I find the comparison between Horus and Jesus to consist of the following: they were of royal descent, they allegedly worked miracles and there were murder plots against them.  Sincerely Your Friend,

Albert Hofmann Passes On At 102 Years Old
Albert Hofmann passed away at his home at 9 a.m. on Tuesday April 29, 2008 of a heart attack at the age of 102.  Albert Hofmann was born in Baden, Switzerland in 1906. He graduated from the University of Zürich with a degree in chemistry in 1929 and went to
work for Sandoz Pharmaceuticals in Basel, Switzerland. With the laboratory goal of working towards isolation of the active principles of known medicinal plants, Hofmann worked with Mediterranean squill (Scilla maritima) for several years, before moving on to the study of Claviceps purpurea (ergot) and ergot alkaloids.

Over the next few years, he worked his way through the lysergic acid derivatives, eventually synthesizing LSD-25 for the first time in 1938. After minimal testing, LSD-25 was set aside as he continued with other derivatives. Four years later, on April 16, 1943, he re-synthesized LSD-25 because he felt he might have missed something the first time
around. That day, he became the first human to experience the effects of LSD after accidentally ingesting a minute amount. Three days later, on April 19, 1943, he decided to verify his results by intentionally ingesting 250 mcg of LSD. This day has become known as "Bicycle Day" as Hofmann experienced an incredible bicycle ride on his way home from the lab.

In addition to his discovery of LSD, he was also the first to synthesize Psilocybin (the active constituent of 'magic mushrooms') in 1958. Albert Hofmann, known as the 'Father of LSD', continued to work at Sandoz until 1971 when he retired as Director of Research for the Department of Natural Products. He continued to write, lecture, and play a leading
role as an elder in the psychedelic community until his death at the age of 102.

     Dr. Karl Buchanan

Tassili Eulogy:                  "Reflections on a Man I Never Knew"

I was on the Earth when a great and beautiful wonder occurred - and that is saying something compared to those who lived in all the centuries of abject darkness after the loss of the ancient world. A slave like, violent, lifeless psychosis burst apart in the latter days of the 19th century by a gentle and graciously intelligent chemist from a far away place where all they eat is chocolate, and their girls are all like models. I really appreciate LSD! Hon I mean that, and I have since the first day oh those 30 years ago, though I haven't seen any that was the "real Owsley" in ever and ever. I admit I was shocked when I heard Tuesday - I had to take several seconds to register what I thought of that and it came up stupidly "But I wasn't ready". My neighbor said "He got to see at least one medical use and that made him happier he said." But she doesn't realize how much more our lovely uncle Albert will have to see from his place in the skies (if such is done..) how much more the discovery of Dr. Hoffman will reveal to man and medicine yet in the years to come. For some it already has but still remains outside the mainstream format and better with competent application if medicine be the purpose. I believe he knew, but I know he had to consider that perfection is damned hard to achieve on Earth and from every truly great discovery flows as much chaos and horrid comedy as any meager one except with more force. Dr. Albert Hofmann's "LSD25" was a true "force majeur" that rippled the entire race and Earth. Even more than Bill Gates! (Imagine!) LSD was like the Bible you ate!

So the man I was so suspicious of until I learned "No, he was just very good with chemistry - it was not his God" thereafter became the only final word I cared to hear at all owing not to his creation of the drug, but to his intimate understanding and perspective. His ever balanced and beautifully poised way of saying things frankly and directly as well as his larger thoughts - he was always a better scholar than me. Also, I always loathed those st*pid, great giant a*ses floating themselves off and around as gurus, guides & counselors (gimme a break!) even as a kid. I felt insulted that they would even try, and that what they tried seemed an uglyish, unwelcome form of violation and exploitation - No sir! Not me! I-am-the-very-model-of-a-modern-major-general! (hm...) As an adult I would remain odiously offended (anathema marantha) at any purported psychedelic research which was re-hashing the Entheogen feature and especially the "Joan Hallifaxes" of the world scurrying desperately around seeking note and prominence for ethicless idiotic misuse. I chose "my man" because of his self described "problem child" and because I would spend twenty years challenging a simple concept (synthetic/mother nature's kitchen) which has not "gelled" for me but has gotten much larger and much more helpful over the years. Maybe someday I'll have the maturity, poise and grace of our marvelous Albert but he was born into a world which however dark had not abandoned grace, poise and dignity as our world today has. Alas, even at my age I am "tainted goods" and

#24 TEO May 2008  Page 08              Copyrighted Material

comparatively all but bereft of some of the key virtues that grant such wisdom and power. Compared to Dr. Hofmann I am as a "Forest Fire Physician!" - I go charging in under heavy fireproof squirting, raking and shoveling as fast as I can go! Man I destroy the sh*t out of disease! - I count on guys like the Dr. Hoffmann to do the thinking about what I am fighting it with a lot. It's good to be me, but he always gave one something to wonder at what it would be like to be...such a divinely down to Earth gentleman.

Dr. Albert Hofmann gave me both a model and a challenge - fantastic ideas I couldn't refuse and also couldn't fail to test to their limits. I never wrote him a letter. Now I'll have to eat 'ol mushrooms again to see if I can get a message through! I just could never combine cordiality, compliment and question satisfactorily - and certainly never "the" question, the question you would ask the man who conceived the possibility and application amid the ocean that is mind and possibility (I mean simple, admirable "pharmacognosy" - I'm just too romantic) At this point though, a card that simply said "Good Show!" would have said it all and been better than what I got sent off right? I did always want to say "I'm sorry if I ever seemed like your problem child. Bucking and grabbing; I have hard head and "show me" real bad, a trait no doubt inherited from my feral Scottish and Indian ancestry." I realized I was afraid of the power he showed in synthetic chemistry because I was afraid of all the lesser men unworthy to say then holding up every chemical creation and calling it a grail, hucksters of psychedelic society and religion which are just fantasies really. Second rate synthetics with much less potential and application and many damn dirty and dangerous now flooding our chemist's shelves and drug stores - but there I go a' mourning and this is about celebration and continuation. Ironically, the passing of Dr. Hofmann will give another resurgence to LSD intelligence and application. Let's hope we get another Owsley too. After all Hofmann made it, but Owsley made it for me, and may God bless him always too.

Good night you Great Gentlemen! Great gentlemen of mind and humanity!

Ever pursuing you I remain!

Mr. John Allen………Psilocybe caerulipes and the newly named species, Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata

In my research with Chulalongkorn University, and on the internet OMC online shroom sites, there has been much confusion surrounding the differences between Psilocybe caerulipes and the newly named species, Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata which are similar in their habitats (along streams and riverbanks along the east coast west to Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio), and their macroscopic descriptions but differ in the microscopic taxonomic descriptions.  Because of this confusion, many have referred to Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata as ‘bl;ue foot,’ a name used to refer to Psilocybe caerulipes.

Originally, Dr. Gastón Guzmán of the Instituto de Ecologia in Xalapa, México, was going to name this new mushroom in my honor as Psilocybe allenii Guzmán.  However, after examining the specimens sent to him from "Shroomy Dan" of Ohio, Dr. Guzmán found he had already examined a similar collection the year before, then submitted a paper and published the name as Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata.

So I, along Dan Molter of Ohio, Dr. Prakitsin Sihanonth of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand  and Dr. Jochen Gartz of the University of Leipzig, Germany, decided to research the two species and write a paper on the comparative chemistry, DNA, cultivation and SEM of the two species in order to provide to the scientific and academic communities, scientific data that these are indeed two different species which ludible users refer to as, 'blue foots.' #24 TEO May 2008  Page 09         Copyrighted Material

We wrote to Dr. Patricia Rogers of the University of Michigan's herbarium and she approved, in an email to me, that we could have some collections of Psilocybe caerulipes to study them for our research project.

In other words, she gave us her word. Her word, as a member of the University of Michigan's faculty and loan approver of the Herbarium of the University of Michigan. to loan us these specimens for our legitimate research project.  This was her word of honor.

I report below, the abstract of our paper, with a change in the title of the paper and in a sequence of exchanged letters, the denial of these specimens by her superiors.  I omit the exchange of mail between my colleague at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and myself as not important to this line of exchanges between me and the University of Michigan.

This travesty of injustice and dishonor by the academic faculty of the University of Michigan shows that their word and honor is a lie and is totally unacceptable and is disgusting to me as a person who has kept my word to all of the scholars I have known, met and worked with on similar mushroom projects during the past 32-years of my life long research into the history and ludible use of hallucinogenic Psilocybe fungi.

This research of my life’s work includes more than 9 books, 30 published papers in prestigious scientific and academic journals and magazines, one mushroom poisoning poster, 3 CD-ROMS (including a bibliography of 2,700 articles, 1,700 annotations, 8,500 cross-references and 700 photographs), and a website, Mushroom John’s Tales of the Shrooms (http://www.mushroomjohn.org) which contains over 14,000 photographs related to the study and history of psilocybian fungi.

ABSTRACT of propose paper with title change:

The Occurrence, Cultivation, and Chemistry of Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata, a new Bluing Species (Agaricales) from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia

By:  Gartz, Jochen1, Allen, John W.2, Molter, Dan3, and Prakitsin Sihanonth4.

Abstract

Cultivation and analysis of Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata, a new bluing species from Ohio

and Bethany West Virginia is presented. Cultivation of this species was demonstrated on hardwood substrate.  Analysis of both caps and stems revealed the presence of psilocybin, in most cases psilocin and always low concentrations of baeocystin. Psilocybin, psilocin and baeocystin levels varied in the bluing caps and stems of this new species. The highest concentrations of these alkaloids were found in both naturally grown and cultivated fruiting bodies of Psilocybe ovideocystidiata which, at the present moment is an indigenous species found in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.. The relative alkaloidal content of psilocybin, psilocin and baeocystin found in Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata from Ohio was similar to that measured in Psilocybe caerulipes by Leung et al.  Recent comparative chemical analysis of both species was unable to be performed due to a denial of specimens through the University of Michigan’s herbarium.

KEYWORDS: Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata, Psilocybe caerulipes, cultivation, psilocine, psilocybine, baeocystine, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania.

Discussion of letters between John Allen and the University of Michigan’s Herbarium Faculty.

[quote]

Discussion:

While working through the Department of Microbiology at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, the authors had been promised collections of P. caerulipes for our research, by Dr, Patricia Rogers, Collection Manager, of the MICH Fungus & Lichen Collections in May of 1907, she requested that we send the request through the Herbarium at Chulalongkorn University.  On May 3, 2007, Dr. Rodgers sent us this message concerning our request for herbarium specimens for our legitimate research:

“To request a loan of fungi, please ask Dr. Sihanonth to write to the Herbarium, care of the Fungus Collection:

University of Michigan Herbarium, Fungus Collection, 3600 Varsity Drive, Ann Arbor MI.,  48108-2287,USA.”

"Please ask Dr. Sihanonth to include in his letter a brief explanation of the study for which the fungi would be used, how many collections he would like to borrow, and how much destructive sampling for DNA or other purposes would occur”

By August of 2007, we had not received the promised samples and again wrote a letter of request to Dr. Rodgers.  On August 22, we received the following missive from Dr. Rogers:

“Dear Mr. Allen,        #24 TEO May 2008  Page 11             Copyrighted Material

I am truly sorry for the delay this has caused your and Dr. Sihanonth’s studies, but to my knowledge we did not receive his letter.

The loan procedure has changed at MICH, but the request will be processed quickly.  We have centralized our loan requests and email is acceptable.  Please have the correspondent of Chulalongkorn University’s herbarium, Thaweesakdi Boonkerd, email Dr. Richard Rabeler at rabeler@umich.edu  and request the collections on Dr. Sihanonth’s behalf.  If he wishes he can refer to our correspondence and assure Dr. Rabeler that the loan was approved in May.  I will speak to Dr. Rabeler about sending the loan by express rate.  We will loan the collections to Chulalongkorn University’s herbarium for study by Dr. Sihanonth.

I am sorry I cannot proceed without the formal request, but I will make this loan my first priority once the request has been received and will email you when I ship it.

Sincerely, Patricia Rogers, Collection Manager, MICH Fungus & Lichen Collections.”

After several more communications between Dr. Prakitsin Sihanonth and Dr. Thaweesakdi Boonkerd of the Herbarium at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok between August of 2007 and February of 2008 and the University of Michigan’s Herbarium Department, we had still not received the promised samples of Psilocybe caerulipes so another letter was sent to Dr. Rogers, who again replied to one of the authors (JWA).

“Dear Mr. Allen

Thank you for the images of P. ovoidiocystidiata.  We appreciate them.  I checked our photo file, which is unfortunately all black and white photos, but we do not have any images for this species.

Regarding your question about the progress of your loan request, please ask Dr. Boonkerd to contact Dr. Richard Rabeler (rabeler@umich.edu), who is our correspondent for loans.  At U of M, loans have always been made institution to institution, to relieve individuals of responsibility for proper specimen storage and loan returns, and so direct communication from the correspondent of the herbarium of Chulalongkorn University to Dr. Rabeler is the best way to address this matter.

Best wishes, Patricia Rogers”

Again, communication between JWA and Dr. Sihanonth at Chulalongkorn revealed that Dr. Thaweesakdi Boonkerd had sent an official request to Dr. Richard Raberler at the University of Michigan requesting the specimen loan which Dr. Rogers had previously approved for us.

On February 20, 2008, I received a forwarded letter from Dr. Rogers that my colleague and co-author of this paper, Dr. Prakitsin SIhanonth had received a note that he had communicated with Dr. Boonkerd and Dr. Boonkerd reported that he had received no reply from Dr. Richard Rabeler concerning our request for the specimens of P. caerulipes.         #24 TEO May 2008  Page 12             Copyrighted Material

On March 13th of 2008, I received a communication from Dr. Prakitsin Sihanonth of Chulalongkorn University asking me to, “write to Dr. Richard Rabeler and ask him what is the problem.”  On April 4, 2008, JWA received the following response from Dr. Rabeler:

“Dear Mr. Allen:  Thank you for your message.   On 21 February 2008, I sent  the following message to Dr. Boonkerd at his e-mail address ('Thaweesakdi.B@Chula.ac.th') in response to his message of 14 January 2008 (also reproduced below):

“Dear Dr. Boonkerd:  Please excuse the delay in replying to your letter requesting the loan of specimens of Psilocybe caerulipes.

I regret to inform you that we have been advised by our legal counsel that we cannot send any of our Psilocybe specimens on loan at this time.  Sincerely,

Richard K. Rabeler, Senior Collection Manager, University of Michigan Herbarium Cc: Dr. Paul E. Berry, Director.

“Dear Dr. Richard Rabeler,  Please see my letter from the attached file. Best regards, Thaweesakdi.”

“Dr. Rabeler added the following footnote to this denial of request:

" I am following the position of our Director, Dr. Paul E. Berry, on this matter.  While we regret the inconvenience, we cannot fulfill this loan request.

Sincerely, Richard K. Rabeler, Senior Collection Manager, University of Michigan Herbarium.”

Although we had the written permission promised to me for the use of herbarium material

#24 TEO May 2008  Page 13              Copyrighted Material

by Dr. Patricia Rogers, it appears her word has no value of trust. No reason was provided to any of us authors as to why we were later denied this permission by a separate party from the herbarium, so we were not able to conduct a comparative chemical and taxonomical analysis between the two species.
In "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World," Stamets (1996) wrote on page 105 that P. caerulipes is "moderately active; no analysis published."  However, Leung et al., 1965, reported the presence of both psilocine and psilocybin in Psilocybe caerulipes.  [ quote]  Leung, A. Y., Smith, Alexander H., and A. G. Paul. 1965. Production of psilocybin in Psilocybe baeocystis saprophytic culture. Journal of Pharmaceutical Science vol. 54:1576-1579.  Also noted the chemical analysis of Psilocybe caerulipes.

Submitting Spore Print Samples and Articles to This Journal “TEO”

If anyone has an article or something they would like to submit to be in "TEO", please submit to FloridaMycology@cs.com or postal mail to FMRC, POB 18105, Pensacola, FL 32523.  If what you send in is used, you win a year’s free subscription to TEO, Hard Copy Issue.  Other articles found in newspapers and other print, should be sent postal mail.  Any article used earns the sender a year’s free subscription to “TEO”.  “TEO” is the physical issue of this Journal; “TEO” Electronica is the electronic version of issue.  So, be sure to include your postal address when submitting any article.  Mail Call entries earn no free subscription.  You may also elect and state not to have your name published or listed with article.  Ideas about regular columns by you are welcomed, as are all other ideas that you feel will be helpful to this Journal.

Because this Journal also comes with spore print samples affixed inside, you may submit mushroom spore prints on paper to be placed in this Journal.  Several full sheets are needed so that everyone receives a sample.  Examples of mushroom spore print samples affixed in past "TEO" Issues:  Amanita muscaria, Psilocybe cubensis, Amanita pantherina, Psilocybe azurescens, and Panaeolus foeniscecii/cyanescens

Spores should be sent to FMRC, POB 18105, Pensacola, FL 32523.  Actual live mushroom spore print samples are affixed into journals for identifying purposes only.  They can be compared to suspected found

mushroom's spores to help in making a positive identification.  No growing claims are made or implied.  Any articles, spores, or other submissions that are used earn you a year's free Hard Copy Subscription.

Submitting spore samples for Journal entries entitles you to one year’s free subscription to the "Physical" issues published by FMRC.  Only select prints that you are sure of identification.  Do not submit samples you cannot identify.  "TMC" and "TEO" ("THE MUSHROOM CULTURE", The Journal Of Mushroom Cultivation (TMC) and "TEONANACATL", The International Journal Of Psychoactive Mushrooms TEO), both published by FMRC, still remain the only "Color" mushroom journals that come with mushroom spore print samples.  This is mainly due to reader collection and the fact it is quite troublesome to place the said samples in this Journal.  To this date, I know of no one else who has tried taking on this task.  Mushroom prints should be taken on paper.  Any dark colored spores can be taken on white paper.  Light colored or white spores should be taken on a dark colored paper.  This will ensure contrast and make the spores easy to see.  Seven to nine complete sheets should be submitted.  Place and affix (with staple or tape) cover sheet over each sheet of prints.  Send date and place collected.

Because these issues have this unique feature of mushroom spore print samples to aid in the correct identification of mushrooms collected out in the wild, they have a cut off of 3,000 subscribers.  This makes original Hard Copy back issues of "TMC" and "TEO" rare and the most valuable to collect.

Know The Mushroom Laws In Your Area:  Some readers who receive this Journal live in areas where no mushroom laws exist.  Others, like those living in the USA, must be aware of laws that forbid the possession and cultivation of mushrooms that contain controlled substances.  Psilocybe cubensis is an example of an illegal mushroom in the USA.  As articles are done on an international basis, always keep in mind the laws on these said type mushrooms in your own specific area.  Most all areas allow mushroom

spore print samples on paper to aid in the identification of mushrooms found out in the wild.  Questions?  Check with the law from a pay phone.  Write down date, name and badge # of officer spoken with, to confirm any “no laws”  answer given.

                Converting Ibotenic Acid Into Muscimol

From:  razer9
To: FloridaMycology@cs.com
Stephen, I know you are a mycologist and seem to know about chemistry as well.
I'm trying to figure out the answer to a chemistry question of how to convert ibotenic acid to muscimol. I read a very scientific paper that said heating does not in fact convert much of any to muscimol.
I believe you said that the only proven way to convert ibotenic acid to muscimol was from ultra violet radiation. I want to remove the carbon molecule. Do you know of any way to do this? I don't need lab quality purity.
Do you think powdering amanita muscaria mushrooms and placing them out in the sun under glass would have enough ultra violet light? Or, what nano meter wave length is needed and where can I get the correct light?
Is there no way to truly get rid of a simple carbon molecule from home?

What I read, I read maybe 6 or more months ago. I think this is the post that has an excerpt from it. I think I also found a pdf of the more complete article back when I was reading or it was posted somewhere. Doing a Google search today with some of the text in quotes Google finds an online journal where this text can be read in complete, but I know I never read any text from something like that. What I remember reading was that you have to use a liquid other than water possibly at many hundreds of degrees and for a very long time and even then only a small percent is converted, thus it seems an ultra violet source may make the most sense, though I don't know how well the radiation could penetrate the source. At the very least it would have to be powdered and then spread thin and exposed to the light of the correct wave length, assuming this is even effective.  Thanks

razer9…….I would just slice the mushrooms about 1/8th inch thick.  Check for worms and their tunnels.  Discard any like this.  Do the drying when first collected.  Do not wait.  This is because of worms again.  Place the cut pieces out in open sun.  Turn several times until dry like crispy crackers.  Depending on humidity, this may take a few days.  Bring them in at night if more days are needed.  Place them back out in sun the next morning.  They may draw many flies.  This is natural.  You may even see the fly killing affect of Ibotenic Acid.  Don't allow any pets access to them.  They will eat them!  This will not be good for them.  Then, seal away from the outside air, like in a canning jar with a tight lid.  They many times smell like roasted peanuts.  If weather doesn't allow for sun drying, place the cut mushrooms in the oven on low heat and keep the door cracked to let moisture escape.  Dry like crackers.  Then, when weather permits, place them out in the sun.  One full day should be enough.  Two days would be absolute conversion.  slp/fmrc

------                             Liberty Caps Talk, MushroomJohn
Steven,
I will reply briefly about your coins and George.  Liberty cap mushrooms grow in the U.S.A in upper state they have only been scientifically reported four times in 50 years, so they are not common until you hit Northern New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island and northern and central Quebec, but are extremely rare (Very Rare) in the northeast USA. They are then most common in the USA in the Pacific Northwest so I doubt that George ate Psilocybe semilanceata (liberty cap) mushrooms which are used recreationally in the PNW since they do not grow on the east coast of America, and if George ate shrooms it would have been big meaty shrooms already known to shroom lovers. The liberty cap is a symbol of freedom to the French and Belgium peoples. IT is a design similar to the shape of the Phrygian bonnet (cap) worn by patriots during the French Revolution which occurred in the mid to late 1700.
George lived till 1799.  So again there are discrepancies in when he may or may not have eaten a magic shroom.  And its relationship to that shape on the coins.  I have seen the same shape on

door latches of antique French cabinets from the early 1800s.
This is similar to Mark Hofmann’s paper on Hawaiian Helmets and/or War  bonnets which he claimed were a symbol of being the gill plates of magic shrooms.  However, I disprove this by the fact when there were no magic shrooms in the Hawaiian Islands until Capt. George Vancouver brought cattle there from Africa and the Philippines in the early 1800s.  mjshroomer

Steve: My compliments to the editor and fellow contributors for another thought-provoking edition of TEO.  Having had similar experiences myself, I found the Washington article extraordinarily interesting.  How can one ignore the visions of a visionary American leader?  Cheers, Manton

Dr. Manton.....In today's time, things would be different:  Have you ever wondered how humans made it for so long without all of our Government's laws to protect us?

George Washington......Did he eat Magic Mushrooms and record his Vision "Son of The Republic"? He fought "Game Cock" Chickens on the White House Lawn. He grew "Pot" on the White House grounds! In today's time, he would get 30 years in prison for these felony violations. Our Government should be so proud for making criminals out of these types of people. Stephen L. Peele 11/17/07

I love folks like you who can stand up for the truth.  Halleluiah, Bro', and well done!  May God bless you and your lineage!

Are there any Psilocybes that are “DEADLY?”

Mr. John Allen:  Just a quick note on a question I had for you.  Are you familiar with Psilocybe coronilla?  I have some information on it.  I placed a photo here.  I read where someone said this mushroom was a deadly Psilocybe???  I was wondering if you have any notes somewhere on this being documented.  Shroomy Days to you.  slp/fmrc

Steve:  No Psilocybes are deadly.  In the 1960s and onward, many field guides listed many species of Psilocybe and Panaeolus as deadly, poisonous, hallucinogenic/poisonous, dangerous/poisonous, etc.  There are no deadly Psilocybe mushrooms……..John

Mr. John......thank you very much for confirming that.  I knew I had never heard of such.  Can't say I ever saw "Deadly" in any field guide listed on said mushrooms.  I am aware of the use "Poisonous".  I myself list any mushroom that contains toxins, as poisonous.  That even means Psilocybe because they contain the toxins Psilocybin and Psilocin.  Though least toxic of all the known Psychoactives, I still consider them "Poisonous".  Old school I guess.  I don't ever see myself changing this stance.  I think the line here is the difference between "Deadly", where death is reality, and "Poisonous", where there is just physical outcomes.  Now that I have back up, I will go clarify this before it gets out of hand.  slp/fmrc

Recovery of Mushroom Mycelium From Liquid Culture Media

Hi Stephen, Thanks again. One clarification: when you say, "Liquid culture that would be strained would work better", do you mean I strain out the mycelium and use the liquid? Or strain out the liquid and use the mycelium?  In Teeter's posts it seems that he's using the actual liquid. As if the mycelium is converting the grape juice sugars into ibotenic acid, leaving the liquid ibo-rich.  I know what you think about grape juice... I'm currently experimenting with potato juice.  Many thanks, Art

#23 TEO February 2008  Page 03   Copyrighted Material

Art...........recover the strained out mycelium.  Throw the spent liquid culture out.  What Teeter is dealing with is not any mushroom mycelium.  In my opinion, it is a species of Mucor.  I would venture to say that the actives produced in the grape juice are not the same as produced by any Amanita mycelium.  And, I would also venture out and say the active grown out from Mucor would not be Ibotenic Acid or Muscimol.  Many times when toxins are heated, they create new toxins that were not present before.  I am thinking something like this is going on.  There are many papers published that state heating does little or nothing to convert Ibotenic Acid to Muscimol.

Thank You, for your interest in FMRC! Highest Regards, Stephen L. Peele, Curator FMRC

Dr. Karl......received this email and thought about you.  He mentions several medicinal benefits from mushrooms I thought was interesting.  I send it along for any comments you might have.  Steve/fmrc
                 Medicinal Benefits From Psilocybe Mushrooms
Subj: Plz read. If time permits.

I didn’t expect an actual person to fill me in on the information. I think I’ve before heard of Washington growing, but I figured it was just pro-"pot" fanatics trying to find an angle to influence its legalization, which of course is nearly a ridicules thing to believe possible, if marijuana was made legal, the pharmacies would be out a lot of business in nearly every medicine they sell, other than antibiotics. They couldn’t effectively tax it as they can pills because if the price is too outrageous, people would just grow it themselves (Like they don’t already.) I guess it being illegal is the only way they can currently effectively tax it, they must make a truckload of fines for mere possession, not to mention the other charges that may follow depending on what ever else they can pin on a person. I myself have only consumed mushrooms 2 times, both times they came from fields. They never produced any outrageous visional hallucinations, only intense thoughts and feelings. I am a person that suffers from severe adult ADHD, and under the effects, I finally found myself to think, function, and communicate as a "Normal" person, my brain produced whole concepts, rather than fragments which would occasionally result in an idea... I don’t know exactly why I’m typing this to a perfect stranger, who probably has more important matters in their life to attend to than to listen to some nobody elaborate on what is known as common sense to most people who have been "enlightened". I’d find it interesting to obtain a position in such a research as yours. Not for the "experience" that I could obtain, but because I work at a fast-food restaurant and have to swim in crap-water every night for an amazing 7.5/hr. I do have a question though.. when you said syringes are illegal, you are referring to only the ones containing spores right, because normal syringes can be purchased at a pharmacy by any person with an I.D. and $5, now that’s what I don’t understand, they make marijuana illegal, but they give everyone access to syringes and numerous fixes to load them with. I guess its all about the money, why let the people be safe, when you can make them sorry and profit off their sorrow. People out there are making millions and billions a day screwing over their fellow man, and it still isn’t enough for them to stop. A person in my position could live the rest of their life, away from a world that doesn’t understand or accept them, off the mere interest $1million could bring at only a 2% interest rate a year(that being $5000 more than what I’m currently making each year. This country preaches "Freedom". Freedom is an excuse used to maintain control of the ignorant. True freedom is that single, moment before your life leaves your body, that your mind understand no bounds of your physical existence. I understand this only through my conception into my mothers wound, which was not consensual by my mother to my father. My birth was not natural, due to my father’s attempt to abort me with his fists, and by a Voodoo doll. I was delivers 3 months premature, after

#23 TEO February 2008  Page 04   Copyrighted Material

my mom laid in labor for 2 weeks, due to the doctors having to sew her cervix shut to prevent my untimely delivery which would have resulted in my inability to be typing this at this moment. Even with all that, I only had a 25% chance of survival. I don’t know if you can answer this question, or if anyone could for that matter... . My father wasn’t suppose to be able to produce active sperm cells when I was created because he had a bad case of the chickenpox and nearly died by a high fever. He was also under the influence of LSD during my creation. Would this have had an effect on my ability to learn and understand? I only question because going on only the age of 20 I have read many books on quantum physics, psychology, and theology, and I have yet to find anything I haven’t been able to understand and learn. Sorry for wasting your time... if you even bothered to read... I appreciate the time you already invested into informing me of my original question. To conclude this long elaboration of nonsense, I have an astigmatism(Spell Check) in both eyes(my right eye being 3 times worse than my left) under the influence of Mushrooms, my vision as absolutely perfect in my left eye, and damn close in my right... My doctor tells me I’ll probably be legally blind within the next decade, corrective lenses help but they can match a prescription to make me see well enough to live a comfortable life without migraines from overstressing my eyes. I’ve only found one thing that can fix my vision, and my mental condition, and it is illegal. The USA was constructed and maintained as one nation under God, but now they are taking God out of the equation... How much longer can it last? As Pink Floyd sang as the final lyrics in the Song "Hey You" "Together we stand... Divided we fall." Once again I apologize for my continuous elaborating. I am a very lonely person with a mind that produces thoughts faster than a rabbit reproduces. If you have any insights for me please fill me in... Knowledge and love are the only two things worth pursuing in my opinion. Knowledge, because its the only thing in life that is free. And Love, because it the only thing we have worth living for. Peace be with you... as I watch for entertainment.
I WILL place an order in the future... when I have the money and residency to do so, In your opinion.... Which spores would you suggest I purchase for my observational interest?

Laws On Ordering & Possession Of Mushroom Spores
azure........syringes prepared with mushroom spores capable of producing controlled substances is what I was told is illegal.  No such laws on just empty syringes.  I sold nice glass ones for many years.  I discovered years ago that DuPont is the reason for all the pot laws and it staying in Scheduled 1.  They pump much money into the law making machinery to keep it that way.  They hold all the patents for making paper goods from trees.  To unleash hemp, it would be their end.  Don't know the answers to your other questions about medicinal effects you have had.  I know that many cures are hidden, and I myself have been mystified by a personal cure.  The same brain damage repair that several other people told me stories of.  Mushrooms hold answers to many problems.  I will forward your letter on to a doctor who is researching in these types of things.  No names or other information will be given.  We will see what he thinks.  Can't really suggest any mushroom.  You might find one in the future you just prefer.
